What's Ripe Right Now: Paula Reds Are Open
Rochester apple season is officially underway. Paula Red apples are now open for pick-your-own at Fisher's Fruit & Christmas Tree Farm in Brockport, Monroe County — about a 25-minute drive west of Rochester on Route 19. These early-season apples are bright red, medium-sized, and mildly tart — crisp enough to eat fresh off the tree and sweet enough to use in quick applesauce without much sugar.
Paula Reds are always the first apple variety to ripen at the farm each year, and they don't have a long run. The window is typically two to three weeks before the next wave of varieties begins to come in. If you've been waiting for apple season to start, this is the signal — it's here.
