What's Ripe at the Orchard This Weekend

Rochester-area apple pickers: the orchard is in full swing this weekend, and the variety lineup is one of the best of the season. Macoun is arriving — dark red, dense, and fragrant, with a flavor unlike anything in the grocery store. If you've never picked Macoun before, this is the week to try it. Along with Macoun, Gala is still picking beautifully, and Honeycrisp is at late peak — there's still good fruit on the trees, but that window is tightening. Empire is filling out fast and will be in full swing within the next week or two. Pick-your-own pricing is $14 per 8-quart bag or $40 per bushel. Macoun: Worth Timing Your Visit Around

Macoun has one of the shorter windows of any apple we grow at Fisher's Fruit — typically two to three weeks from first pick to done. When it's on, it's exceptional: sweet, crisp, and intensely aromatic right off the tree. It's excellent for fresh eating, holds up in simple desserts, and pairs well with sharp cheese.
