Pink Lady and Storage Apples Are On

What's Ripe This Week

Rochester-area apple fans, here's the update for the week of October 15th: Pink Lady has arrived at Fisher's Fruit in Brockport, and it's joined by some of the best storage varieties of the season. Fuji is at peak — dense, sweet, and holding firm. Golden Delicious remains strong and is excellent for baking or fresh eating right now. Granny Smith and Braeburn are also in their prime, giving you that tart-crisp snap that's hard to find anywhere else this late in the season.

Bags are $14 for an 8-quart and $40 for a bushel. Before making the trip, check current picking conditions — that's the most accurate picture of what's available when you arrive.

Why Pink Lady Is Worth the Wait

Pink Lady is the last variety to ripen each year at Fisher's Fruit — and that patience pays off. It has a firm, almost crackling texture and a complex sweet-tart flavor that no early-season apple comes close to matching. It's also the best keeper of everything we grow: brought home from the orchard this week, Pink Lady can hold for three to six weeks in a cool spot, and even longer in the refrigerator. If you're picking for storage, baking later in the season, or just want the richest apple flavor of the year, this is the one to come for. Like all apples at Fisher's Fruit, they're grown using organic practices — no systemic pesticides — on a family farm that's been in Brockport, Monroe County since 1973.

A Note on Timing

Mid-October in Western NY means conditions can shift fast. A cold snap, a rain stretch, or warm nights can move ripeness windows earlier or later than any post can predict. What's described here reflects the orchard on the date this was written — the actual state when you visit may differ. Always check current picking conditions before you drive out from Rochester or anywhere across Monroe County. Fisher's Fruit is at 467 Euler Rd in Brockport, about 25 minutes west of Rochester off Route 31.

Only a Few Weekends Left

Apple season at Fisher's Fruit wraps up at the end of October. After that, the farm transitions to Christmas trees — a completely different kind of visit but a great reason to come back in November and December. If you've been holding off on the apple run, now is the time. Pink Lady, Fuji, Granny Smith, and the rest of the late keepers won't be around much longer. The farm blog and current picking conditions will have updates as the season winds down.
