October Picking Update: What's Left and What's Best

What's Ripe at the Orchard Right Now

Rochester-area families, this is a strong week to make the drive out to Brockport. Empire is going strong — firm, sweet-tart, and one of the most versatile picks of the season. Fuji is at or near peak, loaded with crunch and a natural sweetness that makes it exceptional for fresh eating and lunchbox filling. Golden Delicious and Granny Smith are both in full swing, with plenty of fruit on the trees. Macoun, the fan favorite, is winding down — if you've been meaning to get out for it, this may be your last real chance. Pick-your-own prices are $14 per 8-quart bag and $40 per bushel. Before you head to 467 Euler Rd, check current picking conditions for the latest on what rows are open.

Fuji and Golden Delicious: The October Workhorses

If you're coming out to stock up for eating, baking, or storage, Fuji and Golden Delicious are the two varieties to focus on this week. Fuji holds together beautifully after picking — it's one of the best keepers we grow, and a bag will stay crisp in the fridge for weeks. Golden Delicious is mild, honey-sweet, and excellent in applesauce or baked crisp where you want a softer texture. Granny Smith is there if you want tartness: its firm flesh and sharp flavor make it the go-to for pies and cider blends. For apple variety guides, visit /apples.

Macoun Is Winding Down — Last Chance

Macoun doesn't linger. It's one of the shortest-window varieties we grow at Fisher's Fruit, and October 1 puts it in its final days. The deep, wine-tinged flavor and intense fragrance that make it a Monroe County favorite don't come back until next August. If you've been waiting, stop waiting — check /current-picking-conditions before you go, and get out this week if it's still showing. For more on why people plan entire visits around this variety, see our Macoun guide.

A Note on Weather, Timing, and What to Expect

Apple season doesn't follow a fixed schedule — temperature swings, rainfall, and growing conditions all affect which rows are open and how much fruit remains on a given day. What's listed here reflects the orchard as of October 1, 2026, and conditions can shift through the week. Always confirm before making the drive: /current-picking-conditions is updated as things change. Fisher's Fruit Farm is at 467 Euler Rd in Brockport, Monroe County, about 25 minutes west of Rochester. We've farmed this land since 1973 using organic practices — no systemic pesticides.
